Cambridge Teaching Knowledge Test (TKT)
Who is it for?

The TKT is a first certificate for teachers with little or no experience.

There are 5 modules:
Core modules 1-3.
These focus on the candidate's knowledge about the principles and practice of English language teaching.
Specialist modules 4 and 5.
CLIL and YL are specialist areas of English language teaching.
The TKT YL is an exam for teachers and classroom assistants who want to teach English to young learners.
It tests knowledge of concepts related to young learner learning and development, and knowledge of young learners from a teaching perspective, including the planning, teaching and assessment of young learners’ work.
Lesson planning and use of resources for language teaching.
This module focuses on what teachers consider and do while planning their teaching. It also considers the linguistic and methodological reference resources that are available to guide teachers in their lesson planning.
Managing the teaching and learning process.
This module tests teachers’ knowledge of what happens in the classroom in terms of the language used by the teacher or learners, the roles the teacher can fulfil, and the ways in which the teacher can manage and exploit classroom events and interactions.
Content and Language Integrated Learning.
This module tests knowledge of the aims and rationale of a CLIL approach. It covers the planning, teaching and assessment of CLIL. It also focuses on teachers’ awareness of learning demands and support strategies for learners in CLIL programmes.

How you will be assessed
All of the TKT modules are taken on paper, and consist of 80 questions per module. You will have 80 minutes to take each module, and each question is worth one mark. There are multiple-choice and matching questions.

André Alipio
André Alipio started working as a teacher in 1988, and has been a teacher, coordinator, teacher trainer and/or DoS at different institutes in Brazil and abroad. He was responsible for the CPE for teachers at Cellep (BR131), International House São Paulo (BR650), and GTP. He has a B.A. in Communication from PUC/SP, holds RSA COTE and the Cambridge DELTA, IHCOLT from International House World Organization, and a masters degree in TESOL & Applied Linguistics from the University of Leicester. He has also worked as a course developer for 15 years, having delivered courses, training sessions, lectures and workshops in different countries. He has been working as a CELTA tutor (all modes) and Delta tutor (all modules) for different centres.
Elcio Souza
Elcio Souza has a B.A. in Translation and Interpreting, a B.A. in TEFL, and an M.A. in Applied Linguistics from UNICAMP. He also holds an overarching DELTA from Cambridge University. His 32-year teaching experience includes students of all ages and levels at language institutes, regular schools, and universities at both undergrad and graduate programs. Elcio has presented several lectures and workshops for teachers in Brazil and abroad. As an ELT-Pronunciation master coach, Elcio has been training in-service teachers, coordinators, and teacher trainers for over 20 years. He currently tutors Pronunciation, CELTA (all modes), and other language-specific and teacher education courses in Brazil.
Orlando Delgado
Orlando Delgado is a very experienced teacher and teacher-trainer, who is now the Director of Teacher Training at International House Mexico. He also holds ICELT and DELTA from Cambridge University, COLT and CAM from International House, and has an MA in TESOL from the University of Manchester. He is an ICELT moderator and a CELTA/Delta assessor, and has tutored and/or assessed CELTA and Delta courses in different countries, and in different modes (on-site, blended, or all-online). Orlando is now working towards his MBA and has shared his expertise in a number of interviews and teaching programs.

We Love Questions - TKT FAQ
You can take the TKT as often as you like, but it is recommended that you allow time for reflection and improvement in between tests.
The passing score for the TKT is determined by Cambridge Assessment English and is based on the difficulty of the questions and the number of correct answers.
Yes, you must complete all three modules within two years.
Each module of the TKT consists of 80 questions and last 80 minutes.
If you do not pass the TKT, you can retake the test after a period of reflection and improvement.
The TKT is a computer-based test that consists of three modules. Each module is taken separately and consists of multiple-choice questions. The test lasts approximately two hours.
TKT: Module 1 is divided into three sections: describing language and language skills (40 questions), background to language learning (15 questions), and background to language teaching (25 questions).
